Wycombe Talking Newspaper 40th Birthday

Wycombe Talking Newspaper celebrated its 40th birthday by holding an anniversary afternoon tea at Hazlemere Golf Club on Wednesday, April 17 with the Rotary Club of High Wycombe as one of the joint event sponsors.

Wycombe Talking Newspaper is a ‘LIFELINE’ service that provides the Bucks Free Press in audio format for free every week to those who are visually impaired. It has recently rebranded to South Bucks Talking News following an increase in the distribution area.

Hosted by Bargain Hunt and Antiques Roadshow presenter and antiquarian Eric Knowles, dozens of attendees, including a number of recipients of the ‘Talking Newspaper’ and their carers, heard passionate speeches from chair Anthony Bull, Mayor of High Wycombe Paul Turner and the founder Bob Gerhardt, who started the charity. A small group from Wycombe RGS Trad Jazz Band provided an excellent musical interlude.

The charity is served by teams of experienced volunteers, who assemble each Friday to read aloud and record selected items from the newspaper. These readers include 2 of our club members, one being our current president, who attended this well organised and run event, and very much enjoyed it – as did all who attended.

Eric Knowles kept the afternoon running smoothly with plenty of jokes about his Yorkshire upbringing and career. He voiced his own admiration and enthusiasm for this for this local cause.
